Rene Descartes

At work

The father of modern philosophy, Rene Descartes was a philosopher, mathematician and scientist. He is said to have founded modern rationalism, a philosophical movement based on the use of reason and empirical evidence as the means to attain knowledge.

He wrote all his major work, in various languages, over a 20-year period. His most famous philosophical statement, “cogito ergo sum” (“I think therefore I am”), found in his 1637 book ‘Discourse de la Méthode’, is the motto of our firm.

At play

Descartes didn’t find much time for leisure; instead, he was often found writing and editing his works. However, he did enjoy travel and spent most of his life on the move, having lived in France, Hungary, Germany, Holland and Italy.
